2020 Annual Reflection

2020 was an unusual year. For me, it was a time to get closer to my family and appreciate the little things in life. I am grateful for my family and all those I spent time with, whether online or in person. This year taught me perspective and tested all of us many times. Instead of looking outward, I spent more time looking inside, as I am sure many of you did too. Life seemed to slow down, but in some ways the year went by in a blur. The real connections I had were as virtual as they ever have been. I wonder if it is a sign of the times or future relationships will live on like this too. Every day seemed historic, and many were. The world changed and I saw most of it from a computer screen.

Some of our newfound habits are bound to stay. The pandemic gave me a chance to reconnect with people as the virtual world became the real world. I realized no matter where we are in life, we all are going through similar things. It’s always the right time to reconnect or find time for others.

2020 was a year of human resilience. Through all of our scientific, social, and business challenges, many stepped up in inspiring ways. Perhaps the biggest learning for me this year is the true, positive power of empathy and human connection. Every year has its challenges, and as I look back to 2010 and 2000, the world was also on a brink of change. I am sure 2030 will have its own change, but the tools of nimble thinking, empathy, and quick action are with me. In fact, this year truly taught me to embrace change instead of be surprised by it. 2021 may be a roaring year of travel and human connection in a way we have never seen.

Life at Stanford this year was hybrid, and mostly online. Courses were taught well, and I got closer to classmates. It was more academic, and we tried to put normalcy into it. I am grateful to be a part of this special community. I learned that a community can be one person or many.

As each year passes, I realize how important the people around me are. I hope this letter inspires you to take a moment to reflect and gives you some happiness in knowing about a human life you have touched.

Happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year from my family to yours

Ishan
